Thesis Statement
The Fugitive Slave Law of 1850 required the return of runaway slaves to their "owners.” It was a part of the compromise of 1850 and it made the North more against slavery. This law stated that the slave owners could reclaim slaves that ran away from the free states. Anyone who helped runaways or got caught faced huge penalties.
